A journey to the Land of Kings -PART 15: Jaisalmer

 Sand Museum, Jaisalmer

After lunch, our driverji led us to the Sand Museum in Jaisalmer. We had no idea exactly what to expect there. At the ticket counter, we came to know that this was a combined museum, for sand sculptures, wax statues and mirror maze. In addition a 4D theatre and horror house were also there.

We first visited the Sand Museum. There were numerous sculptures made with attention to detail. I was honestly tempted to give a poke to one of the artwork, but considering the hard work of the artists behind these magnificent structures, I held myself back. Many of these were related to women, desert, Rajasthan and similar themes. There was not much rush and we took our time enjoying the view.

We entered the wax museum which housed many lifelike wax statues of celebrities such as film actors, sports stars, historical figures, even fictional characters. We clicked photos with PSY, the Queen, Charlie Chaplin and even Hitler. It was a fun experience.

Next was the mirror maze. The person at the entrance asked us to find the exit by ourselves and shot the door. Inside was illuminated by red and green lights and we were surrounded by mirrors. We were not alone, as there were some other people looking for exit. We wandered around for sometime and reached the exit point.

We skipped the Horror house and 4D theatre, considering my feverish state. We clicked some pics outside and soon departed for the next location.

Kuldhara- the haunted village

On the way to the village the view outside of the car was progressively changing into a yellow desert, with sparse vegetation. Kuldhara is an abandoned ghost village, which was once the place of Paliwal Brahmins. This village was allegedly abandoned overnight during 1825 due to some mysterious reasons. Many speculations exist. One story is about escaping from a ruler who wanted to marry a girl belonging to their family. Anyway after that, noone could live there. May be the place is cursed. Supernatural stories of strange voices and weird sightings are numerous. But thankfully there is no scientific backing.

We wandered around the dilapidated stone and mud houses. We walked on the narrow lanes and explored the temple ruins and fortunately we did not have any ghost sighting.

SAM DUNES

We started our travel to the last location of the day Sam Dunes. The Thar desert sand dunes were indeed a gorgeous sight. We were planning a camel safari after reaching there. But my fever increased a lot by the time we reached there. I needed to rest as my body felt totally beaten with zero strength. This was the one regretful incident during our trip- our exploration of Jaisalmer was not complete because of my illness. In the tent I was resting and my husband was keeping me company. By night there was cultural event arranged outside, with Rajasthani music, dance and even a fire show. Regrettably, we missed all these. I had taken a Montek LC along with antibiotics and slipped into a dreamless sleep. It was chilly with cold howling winds, but I was completely out.

By morning my fever had subsided and my proper recovery started. Another couple Swatiji and Bhaiyya from Kolkata who were with the same tour agency, had actually helped us a lot during these times. Their Good Samritan Act was something which was provided to us even without asking. I wish to see them again sometime...
