My old companion: A poem about a tree
My Old Companion
Outside my window,
I hear,
The old Tamarind tree.
He has been here for long,
Even before I came here,
Standing with his head held high,
Deep roots going down,
To the Heart of Earth;
In the midst of,
An arising concrete jungle,
He stands unwavering.
His fruits are,
A feast for the hungry squirrels;
His branches offer,
A cool shade for tired crows;
In the night,
He provides a meeting place,
For the owls and bats.
When I'm tired and gaze out,
He comforts me with cool breeze.
Others see him as a nuisance,
Falling leaves dirtying the yard,
My protests go unheard.
But still,
I want him to be here,
To cheer me when I'm down,
Oh friend,
Stay here for a long time....
