"The Count of Monte Cristo"- My Reading Journey- Part 1

 The Beginning

I had done my higher secondary education at a government school. One day my English teacher, asked us to name our favourite book. When it was my turn, I told her, “ The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexander Dumas.

So, when did I read this book for the first time?

When I was still in upper primary school, I came across an abridged version of the wonderful book. That was actually a text book meant for higher class. But as my Papa was an English teacher, it was available at home. Once I started this book, I was so hooked to the story, I finished it within a few days.

At that time, I was so impressed by the story, I became a fan of the story. But I thought that was the story. Until I read another abridged version during my higher secondary education. Even though the storyline was same, a multitude of new characters were there. Even some of them, had impressive side stories too. That was when I was enlightened- what I read was not the whole story. Then I made a promise to myself, if possible, I will buy a copy of the unabridged version of this novel myself and read it completely.

Years later, when I joined for my post-graduation course in Karnataka, I started using online shopping platforms for the first time. I had kept a list of books I wanted in my collection with me. I just searched online, and there it was- complete and unabridged version of “The Count of Monte Cristo”. I ordered it using my hard-earned money. Finally, I got the hard copy in my hands.

Unfortunately, I was caught up in academics, or in my free time I was hooked up by  movies or series or even web novels, that I couldn’t read this book for the whole 3 years of my post-graduation course.

Once I came back home after finishing my course, this book was left in my shelf with many other books which I had collected, destined for some time of dust collection. I restarted reading my books one by one. Finally I decided to start with this majestic book.

I don’t read the book daily. But when I get free time, I dedicate a few minute to go through a few pages.

It is a slow progression… but it’s definitely happening.
