Doppelgangers in Kdramas
As an avid K drama fan, I’m familiar with a variety of k
drama plots, which never fail to attract the viewers no matter how many times
they are used. One such plot variety is the introduction of doppelgangers- they
may be twins or they may be strangers. But once the doppelganger is introduced
the whole plot changes in an interesting way. So let’s look into some
doppelganger K dramas which I’m particularly fond of.
1. 1. Bride of the Century

This is one of the first K dramas I have watched and I was drawn to it, just because of its interesting plot. The doppelgangers are from differing family backgrounds- one is a rich city girl, engaged to the heir of a wealthy company and the other is from a coastal town, dreaming of opening a successful restaurant in Seoul. Their fates and lives are changed, when the rich girl goes MIA, because of the cold and distant behavior of her fiancĂ©e. Add to this a mixture of mysterious ghost, mothers with ulterior moves, and the century old legend – that the first bride of first son of the family is supposed to be dead after first night of marriage, and not to forget a love triangle.

I have watched this drama repeatedly for many times and it never tires
me. Lee Hon Ki and Yang Jin Sung pair was adorable, the cake eating contest was
actually cute. The ending was also satisfactory, they also gives an explanation
why these two girls look alike.
Give it a try, if you are into doppelgangers and century old curse…
2. 2. You are Beautiful

This is the series which led me into the unexplored world of K dramas. And I became a Park Shin Hye fan after this one. This one is about two fraternal twins- brother and sister- who look alike (although that is not possible; but any thing is possible in k dramas).( And in the drama, they never shows the face of the brother). The brother is an aspiring singer who finally gets a chance to be included as a part of the idol group ANJELL, and the sister is a novice nun. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the sister is compelled to assume the identity of her look alike brother, and the funny adventure begins. This drama is a mixture of love triangle, gender swapping, and also throws some light into the life of idols. Yeah, there is some backstory intertwining the life of the lead male and female.

This drama was actually remade into Taiwanese series, and this itself shows how popular and successful this show was. And also the pig- rabbit doll from the drama also became an instant hit. I have recently seen the pig-rabbit, in the drama “Good Casting”, and was once more reminded of my first ever drama watching experience.

3. 3. Are You Human Too ?

Third in this list is my favourite Seo Kang Joon drama. Can a robot fall
in love? Can a robot have human emotions ?
A mother, who is a famous scientist, on separating from her son due to family problems, makes a robot who looks exactly like her son. She upgrades the robot regularly, as years pass by to resemble her growing son. The troubled son, who always acts like a rebel, gets into an accident while he goes looking for his mother, and is now in a comatose state. To avoid the company from passing onto wrongful hands the robot son now assumes the identity of the real son. Then comes the female lead, as his new body guard , who actually tries to spy on him at first, but later falls in love with him, even after knowing that he is a robot.

This drama had some of the
most amazing OSTs and I was hooked to this drama from beginning to the end. And
Yes, I have re watched this one many times…
4. 4. Your Honour

This one is about twin brothers
– one of them is a judge while the other is a con man and fraudster, the judge
brother goes missing one day and the fraudster brother assumes his identity, even
when he has somewhat nil knowledge about law and court. But because of his
empathizing attitude and a trusty assistant, he makes things work. This legal
drama is interesting, as it shows various cases
and difficulty in judging tricky situations. Also there is a backstory
linking the lead male and female characters.
5. 5. Queen :Love and War

I haven’t finished watching
this drama, but this one sure has an interesting plot revolving around twin
sisters, separated from childhood, and when one of the sisters selected as the bride of the King, gets assassinated, the
other one gets into the second bride selection for revenge. Also there is the
flashback, showing the young prince falling in love with the alive twin and
that he loved the dead twin because of the misunderstanding. So who is the real
culprit? Will she find true love or be blinded by revenge? I’m also waiting for
this answer.
6. 6.The Crowned Clown

This drama depicts the story, where the King and a commoner looks alike,
and the king who is under repeated murder threats and assassination attempts,
makes the commoner take his place in throne. The commoner although at the
beginning just goes with the flow of corrupt politics and inhuman ways in the
palace, later defends everything and tries to fulfill the role of a true king.
There is a movie version of this
drama, which actually more interesting- “Masquerade”.
7. 7. Mask

This Korean series is about the female lead
who looks like the girl from the rich family, and is asked to take on her after
the rich girl is killed in an accident, for covering her debts. Well, I haven’t
watched this one completely, but the plot was somewhat interesting.
So, these are some of the Doppelganger dramas which I know of. I haven’t
mentioned “The King- Eternal Monarch”, because in that almost all of the
characters have a doppelganger.
Hope you liked the list. If you have more
suggestions of
doppelganger k dramas please mention in the comment box.
